i-Robot Roomba Review
The i-Robot 530
Remember the days when your mother asked you to lift your feet while she sped the vacuum cleaner under you. For the most part this happened whilst you were transfixed to Football Focus and never during Dr Zhivago or Gone with the Wind, although I often did tinker with the idea of settling the score halfway through the last epic scene where Clark Gable stormed in to let Scarlett O’Hara know that she was surplus to requirements. Well, even though the thought crossed my mind for all of ten seconds, my street cred would have been in tatters had anyone peered in through the windows and witnessed my domestic payback.
Fast forward 30 years and in iRobot you have the opportunity to undertake the vacuuming whilst your feet are permanently up.
Testing of this product was great fun - it reduced a group of adults to giggles of childish delight. We soon realised how this innovative product could be utilized as a fantastic tool for more than just individuals who were too busy to vaccum in the traditional way, its also a great tool for people who make their living in the domestic cleaning arena - but more importantly its also a great product for the elderly or infirm.
To test its ease of assembly - we designated this task to the least "techie" member of the team and then timed her: it didn’t take her long to set it up using the easy to follow instructions.
We then switched it on and stood back in amazement as it went off about its business. We wanted to test all its abilities - including the ability to avoid falling down the stairs and had to fight our instincts to shout "be careful!!" as it hovered near the stairs but its inbuilt system recognized that it was not to go any further. You get surprisingly attached to it - we even named it Victor.
At one stage we thought we had spotted a flaw - there was a chunk of fluff on the carpet which i-roomba had left before zooming off on his travels to another part of the house, but almost as if to finish with a flourish - it came back, sped towards the offending fluff, picked it up and whizzed off again.
In conclusion, we thought this product ticked all the boxes and was both timesaving and efficient.
