Advice on quartz countertop thickness

Hi Tim,

We are finally getting to the stage where we are putting base units in and are a little concerned about heights. We are 99% sure we are going to have quartz counter tops, I am guessing these come in a various thicknesses? Our problem is this. We have a sit on sink along 1 wall, worktop around the corner meeting a range cooker. The sink is depth 40mm.

So, to the questions! Do the quartz counter tops sit directly on the base units? Would it be best to leave the fixing of the sink unit until the day of instalation? Our cooker has a lift glass lid, were do we want the worktop to meet the height of the glass, or the metal of the hob top itself? Ohh, and whilt I have you, what is your current lead time for quartz (templating and fitting)?

I can take pictures tonight if it will aid your advice :D

Thanks!

Steve,
To answer the questions here, yes, the tops sit directly on top of the base units and are 30mm thick or, if you prefer, 20mm upon 20mm to effectively form a 40mm or above.
The sink is prefitted at the factory after installation so at the time of templating this needs to be on site for our fitters to take with them.
My advice is to fit the units to a height that allows your surface to sit flush with the glass top of the cooker.
Our current lead time from order to completion is 4 weeks but could possibly be sooner.

Hope this helps Steve and I would welcome some images once the installtion is complete,

Regards,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the quick response!

The sink is sit-on, not inset, so I am guessing they would not need to take it? I cannot see a reason for them to as the counter top edge would simply meet, and I guess be water-tight-attached-to, the sink.

2*20mm sounds expensive! Is there a large premium for this? Is it not possible to get 20mm thick (sat on 20mm play?) with 40mm edges?

We basically require 3 L shapes measuring (wall edges) 1200*1200, 1200*1400, 1200*1800. No cut outs, grooves, tap holes. Just polised edges on everything except the wall edges. Ohh, and upstands to the tune of 6800mm!

Thanks again for the info!

Sorry Steve,
I did assume it was an undermount.
The sink will have to be on site at the time of templating and all preparation plumbing and waste pipes need to be in position. The sink will be fitted to the top by the fitters when installing but all plumbing will have to be conected by your plumber.
20mm on 20mm is offered to give that additional depth if required and a subframe is used for the non visible edges so although the cost is greater it is'nt that substantial a difference.
An even chunkier finish is available by the mitreing of the front profile to offer a greater depth if required.
