Built-In Appliances - good or bad idea

Postby JustinMitchell on Wed Aug 19, 2009 8:58 am

We are re-designing out kitchen and are thinking of going with an intergrated fridge and also an integrated freezer as apposed to a side by side american sytle fridge/freezer. My wife has been told to avoid integrated units as they seem to have may problems possibly from the fact that they are enclosed and possibly get hot.

It would be useful to know if anyone else has experienced issues with built-in appliances.

thanks, Justin.

Justin,
Welcome to the forum.
I'm sure many buyers have experienced problems with integrated appliances and my advice would be to choose your manufacturer wisely. Certain brands such as Neff, which are part of the BSH group of appliances that also include Siemens and Bosch, have a very good reputation for reliabilkity, efficiency and after sales service. Others are also earning themselves a good reputation such as Gorenje and I have to bow to the better judgement of our colleagues over at http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk for a more in depth assesment on who are the best to choose but I'm sure they would include the above brands among their recommendations.
As for side by sides, then the same rule applies.

Justin the only way an integrated appliance can get too hot is if the cabinet and plinth it has been fitted to does not adhere to the correct ventilation guidelines. This usually includes a small opening in the plinth line and an opening at the rear of the carcass - which allows air to flow around the important components of the fridge ; check appliance guidelines for correct sizing.

Many cabinet manufactuers will in actual fact supply fridge carcass's with completely open backs and a ventilated base to completely avoid any issues with over heating.

So you should be absolutely fine with integrated appliances as long as your furniture supplier knows what they are doing. I would also second Tim's thoughts on the BSH group, cannot go wrong really.

Good Luck
Daniel
