Dividing wall material (behind cooker)

Postby janski on Mon Apr 07, 2008 9:37 pm

Hello all,

This should be easy enough for someone in the know.

I plan to build a wall in my kitchen so I can install a new fitted kitchen and move my cooker into open space.

My question is - can I build this wall from MDF of does it need to be some kind of fire retardant material?

I have shown the wall on this picture highlighted in green. http://www.flickr.com/gp/8433476@N08/0VJE69
There will be a stainless steel splashback behind the cooker too.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Janski,

Provided the space behind the cooker is finished in a non combustible material, such as the stainless steel splashback, and your appliances are fitted in accordance with the appliance manufacturers instructions then you can go ahead with this plan.
Are you using extraction above the cooker? An Island extractor would suit this application but be sure to strengthen the fixing points as my advice would be never to rely on the hollow fixings that some manufacturers send.
Instead, you should affix the extractor to suitably sized battens or a 3/4" ply board between the ceiling joists to take the weight unless of course you're lucky enough to find existing joists will allow this.

Thanks Tim.

Would the non combustible material need to be just behind the burners or the entire rear of the appliance? I'm not sure how much heat modern cookers give out at the rear. The old thing I have at the moment heats the whole house!

I would like an extractor but ideally something that I could raise out of the way when not in use... Are you aware if such things exist?

Many thanks
janski
