Fitting a dishwasher under electric hob - is it legal?

Postby Andrew on Thu Jul 10, 2003 9:19 am

Tim

I have inherited a kitchen that never had a sensible place designed for a dishwasher, don't know why. The only spot that seems to work in terms of drainage etc. is under the

electric hob, which is of the induction type.

Do you know if it would be legal to site the dishwasher there - or if not, who the best person to ask would be? Any guidance much appreciated.

Thanks - Andrew

Andrew,

There are no statutory regulations relating to this type of configuration yet it is possible that guidelines have been produced by the manufacturer of the hob. If you let me know who

the manufacturer is I shall obtain their opinion and post it on this topic.

Can you clarify the point on drainage ?

Siting the dishwasher elsewhere would seem the best option here both for safety and aesthetic reasons and it may be possible to remove an exisitng cupboard in order to install the

dishwasher.

Thanks Tim.

The manufacturer of the induction hob is De Dietrich. A concern I do have is that there seems to be a fan under the hob which presumably needs some good air flow to work properly, so

even if there is no legal problem, safety may well be.

The water supply and main sink drain are about 120 cm away from the hob - i.e. 2 cupboards' widths. The next cupboard that might be suitable is a further 3 cupboards' away, so the

total distance to the sink drain would be about 300 cm, perhaps a bit more. My concern is that the pump might have some trouble getting all the water out over such a distance, and

gravity might not help enough. There is room behind the cupboards to do the piping, but it is all less than ideal of course.

Thanks for your help!

Andrew,

I've received this response from Bill Hanratty of the Brandt Group of which De Dietrich are a part.

Tim,

"It is possible to fit a dishwasher below the hob as long as there is a
sufficient gap for ventilation left between the two appliances. The customer
should refer to the installation guide for the hob as to the requirements as
I do not have the model number".

Although this seems to clear the confusion I still think you should site it elsewhere and the details you provided re: the waste configuration, are certainly a feasible proposition.
It may help if you read the article on appliance installation on this website.

hope this helps Andrew.
