Hi, im in a bit of a prediciment, i have just bought a new house and the kitchen we ordered is black gloss with a wooden worktop, we have already bought tiles 500 x 500 polished porcalain in black and are now thinking its going to look really dark in out kitchen.

the kitchen is 5.22m x 3.22m and the units go along the top of the room and then down about half way of the length of the room. there is double doors at one end and a window the other,

i found a floor plan http://www.taylorwimpey.co.uk/newhomes/ … floorplan/
But the question is will it look too dark? anyone had experience with this? thanks in advance

Every decision you make on interior styles ultimately has to be your own and if you’re comfortable with it then that’s all that matters but I suspect the consensus from those who design for a living would be that your colour choices do not offer any lighter contrast.
I have to say my preferences would have to be in the same camp and Black with Black will prove too much to live with.

i’m a believer in the correlation of interior colouring to the well being of the mind and a dark environment does little to enhance that feel good factor in our surroundings.

I do hope you have the option of reconsidering the choices you have here and we do have some excellent designers frequenting the forum who will I’m sure, furnish you with better ideas than myself.

Someone else asked a similar question not long ago Steeevo … have a look at the CAD pictures I did to show different floor tile colours:

Yeah i can see where you are coming from about it being too black and dull. that drawing is really good did you do it on sketchup? looks good with black tiles but tbh i prefer the look of the black tiles and black units, maybe because the drawing is very bright so may be decieving.

here is a picture of the kitchen it is twice as long as the photo shows

No, not Sketchup – I’m a kitchen designer – so I have a professional kitchen CAD package.

I think your kitchen would look very dark with black tiles … although with high gloss finishes you do at least get bright reflections. If you preferred the CAD picture with the black tiles, though … then you might like it dark. Colour schemes are a very personal choice!

Hello, I find the discussion very interesting because I am in a similar situation. I am knew to this and am not sure of the correct terms to use but my kitchen is an open plan with the lounge. It shall have royal mahogany cupboards, granite black counter tops and black floor tiles. It shall have edgar grey wall tiles with decorations. I am also afraid that it will be too dark. At first I thought it would be different and nice but then after some thought and visualization, i thought it would be too dark. I am thinking of changing the top to granite white instead of black. In case I do not get the granite which, may someone assist. Also, I have a lot of silver staff in the kitchen like the microwave, kettle, fridge etc that will be visible in the kitchen.

The lounge, however, since it is connected has white floor tiles. I wonder how all this will look. Dark wood cupboards, granite black top, black floor tiles, lots of silverware, light greyish wall tiles….Please help
