Please help me! I am having a new kitchen installed which will have high gloss white units with chocolate brown end panels and plinths. I now need to decide what colour to have the work surface and tile floor. I am thinking of having a chocolate quartz work surface but am unsure as to what colour the floor should be. I was thinking of brown, but am not sure if this will be too much. I had also thought of a light grey work top with grey tile floor. I am confusing myself now and would really appreciate any suggestions you may have! |

Hi Sam, Colour schemes are very much personal taste … but here’s what I think. I love the idea of chocolate quartz worktops and you could indeed go for grey floor tiles – but not too dark. You could even get some with a slight lilac tinge to them – I think violet or light purple goes really well with chocolate brown. Alternatively you could go for a hint of blue or a hint of green in the floor tiles. (This would also look great with glass splashbacks or glass wall tiles – if you’re having any – which can also have just a hint of colour). If you stick with smooth finish floor tiles then this keeps the overall look modern. What can also look good, is mixing up the textures a bit. Mottled stoney floor tiles (not necessarily real stone) with flecks of dark brown in them … or slate tiles (or slate lookalike) would give you a much more textured floor which would be a good contrast to the high gloss units. Hope that helps! |

Majjie, "Tim, Majjie, on another note but still related to this post, I’d be interested on your opinion of luxury vinyl flooring. I have to say I’m a great fan having witnessed how well it looks and it’s durability over a long period of time. Tim |

Hi Tim, I too am a fan of good quality vinyls. They’re very practical and warmer to the feet than stone or ceramic. I think you have to pick your colour and finish carefully, since some are better looking than others – some of the tiles with a separate grout strip are great (although I bet they’re not any fitters favourite). I particularly like some of the new textured wood effect finishes – so much more practical than real wood and quieter and more water resistant than laminate. |
