Firstly, thank you for an excellent site: I’ll definitely be back. I have a question I hope you can help me with. I have just moved to a house where the tiny kitchen needs ripping out and replacing. The room has 2 doors (one internal, to the hallway, and one external, to the side of the house) and 2 windows: not a lot of space to fit a kitchen after all that! My question is, is it OK to have the side door bricked up, to provide extra wall space and allow me to get a U shape kitchen fitted? I would get patio doors put in at the back of the house so would still have a front and back door to the building, but there would be no external door from the kitchen. When I have asked around, people either don’t know what I’m worrying about or tell me that you MUST have a fire-escape door from a kitchen… |

Bikebug, Welcome to the forum and thank you for the kind words. We have the luxury of a number of knwledgable experts in a variety of fields who give up some of their time to assist visitors and that, above all things, is why we enjoy a huge popularity with visitors. If your criteria in blocking off the exit door from the kitchen is to create the space to realsie your ambitions for more space in the kitchen, then it is perfectly acceptable. There are no regulations that state an exit door as mandatory directly from the kitchen. This may be different if the householder has a disability and I shall investigate this before posting back. |

Thanks very much: that sets my mind at rest and makes it worthwhile getting on with my next (and least favorite!) job of contacting builders for quotes to sort out the doorway. Then I can get on with the nice bit of changing the kitchen to something far better… cheers, BB |
