We are fitting a new

kitchen and are doing our

research before buying and getting it fitted. For years we have always had cupboards below

the work surfaces. What are the pros & cons of having wide draws fitted instead. We

would be interested in the

views of any forum readers. Thanks. Lee

Hi

Leo,

Good to see you are researching before deciding! I think drawers are a convenient alternative to standard units.

There is little difference in the amount of space on offer, but the

advantage with drawers is that everything comes

out to you, rather than kneeling on the floor trying to reach stuff!

The bigger the better with drawers also – 800, 900

and 1000mm wide drawers will be great, and theres plenty of options for inside the drawers, like inserts & organisers.

Obviously

corners are best as either the ‘L’ shaped version, or the ‘Magic Corner’ version. There is this new fad

of a drawer in and ‘L’ corner, which is pretty useless! Also, adding the

soft close system to these types of drawers

is a great idea.

So i think drawers, but if you’re not sure, why not have some of each? Have you approached any

specific manufacturer as yet?

Leo,

Welcome to the forum.
To add to Mark’s suggestions I would consider a blend of configurations to suit each

application in your design.
Wide drawer cabinets offer you a more aestheticallly pleasing finish and a more ergonomical

solution, which is a trend I expect kitchen designers will find more attractive to the

consumer.
They reduce the

effort required as they are less physically demanding and the range of accessories that now come with drawers make them even

more attractive to the buyer.
If each cabinet in your design was allocated a task in the kitchen you may choose to employ

drawer bases, hi-line cabinets and drawer line cabinets incorporated into one design.
Perhaps this is a possibility in your

own project.

Tim.
