We are about to install a Bosch fully integrated dishwasher. (illustrations only) and do not show a waterproof barrier underneath the worktop. However, I have read elsewhere that this is advisable. Is this really necessary, and if so, what material should I use? |

Pommy, Bosch provide a metal waterproof guard that must be fitted to the underside of the worktop before you install the appliance and if you had witnessed the results of the damage caused by non fitting of the waterproof barrier you’d be fully aware of the importance of fitting one for an impervious work surface such as wood or laminate. The guard is fitted using pins provided by the manufacturer and should be fitted flush to the worktop front edge spanning the width of the dishwasher. Holes are provided in the guard relative to the fixing points for the dishwasher and using the screws provided the appliance can be fitted to the worktop. |

Thanks for your help. Should have known Bosch would have provided these items! BTW, this is a great site, with a wealth of info for us DIYers. |

When fitting an integrated dishwasher under a granite worktop to substitute the fixing points of a wooden worktop, I suggest that a top rail spanning the distacnce of the appliance be it 600 or 450mm is the best solution. This will allow you to fix the dishwasher as instructed. is the ability to fix to the adjacent units and this depends on the machine brand. Tim. |

As a follow up question to this, I am having a granite worktop fitted and the templaters were in yesterday. I asked them about how the fully integrated (Neff) dishwasher would be fixed in place and their response was not entirely satisfactory: and good to screw to the fridge door! However, the templater proposes that the dishwasher be glued to the worktop, since apparently it is not possible to screw it in place. Clearly not ideal as this will make maintenance a real pain. Why can’t I screw it into the worktop? I’m having an undermounted sink installed and that is going to be screwed and glued. Any suggestions gratefully received! Cheers Jon |

Jon, Gluing the appliance to the worktop is not an option and will invalidate your guarantee as well as proving difficult in allowing correct maintenance should it be needed. I’m a little confused as to why your fridge should be dircetly next to your dishwasher without a seperating panel and perhaps you will clarify this but as I’ve stated earlier in this thread, “when fitting an integrated dishwasher under a granite worktop to substitute the fixing points of a wooden worktop, I suggest that a top rail spanning the distacnce of the appliance be it 600 or 450mm is the best solution. This will allow you to fix the dishwasher as instructed”. Hope this helps you. Tim |

Thanks for the quick response, Tim! In answer to your question as to why there is no panel between the two – I can’t say for sure as I didn’t fit them myself, but if I put in a panel between them, then there would be a big gap between the 2 doors wouldn’t there? In terms of the top rail, can you clarify this a little please, i.e. can you give me an idea of rough dimensions (depth, width), what it’s made of and how to attach to the granite? Apologies for my ignorance! Thanks again |

No problem Jon, The crossmember should be 150mm deep similar material to your cabinets ie 18mm. This should be fitted as a top rail between your cabinets but in your case this may prove impossible as your fridge is directly adjacent the dishwasher. I can now comprehend what you mean and the larger gap could only be eliminated by means of a custom door size to cover a panel between the two appliances. Have you got the alternative to relocate the fridge? Such things as this can be overlooked when planning a kitchen but it’s only when fitting is in progress that you realise it could have been planned in a more practical way. |

We could put in a crossmember across both fridge and dishwasher, anchored to the units either side. Would that be strong enough to take the weight though? No real alternate position for the fridge unfortunately… |
