Darren,

Hardwood tops can be fabricated to increased widths as a special order and are available this way through a number of trade suppliers.

For jointing purposes you can join as you would a laminate top using worktop bolts but I would recommend using silicone sealant as the preferred jointing compound although it is

particularly difficult to retain an even joint due to the movement all hardwood tops are subject to over time.

thanks tim,

I found this( RESIN WOOD GLUE (one trade name is Cascamite) Only used for sticking wood to wood, Will fill small gaps. . Dries clear like glass.)
Some have said this is very good, top will be beech, tring to get the joint not to notice as best as I can.

what sort of silicone(brand) do you rate Tim, can you get a beech colour?

Darren,

It is recommeded that you use at least three worktop bolts and 4, size 20 biscuits along with several applications of end grain sealer prior to jointing. A low modulus silicone

sealant is recommended for the joint but I’m uncertain of it’s availability in a matching colour and in all honesty a tight joint shouldn’t require colour matching.

Wooden worktops require a great deal of care and maintenance prior to and after installation and are affected by both temperature and humidity.

Hope this helps

will the end grain sealer not stop the silicone sealant

from sticking?

can you point me to a place to purchase this end grain seaer for beech worktop.

Thankyou

Hello Darren

You can get solid worktops at. They supply the worktops for the bespoke kitchens which I fit.

If you can supply them with a drawing of worktop sizes then they will supply with joints already done. End grain will already be sealed.

Hope this helps you out

Darren,

Danish Oil is the preferred and recommended sealer to use and is widely available

Apply liberally with a clean rag or brush and wipe off the surplus oil after a few minutes.

Allow to dry and repeat. New wood generally requires 3 applications.

You raise an interesting point with regard to silicone adhering to the worktop after sealing but unlike a varnish Danish Oil penetrates without leaving a film on the surface. It is

important that it is allowed to dry thouroughly before making the joint.

Miles,

Thanks for your contribution but I have edited your post to exclude the advertising of a company name. By all means use your private message facility to alert members to a recommended

retailoer but we cannot allow them to be named on the forum. If however they, as experts in solid wood worktops, wish to contribute to this or any other post in relation to tips etc.

we would reconsider this position.

Hello Tim

Sorry I was not aware that I could not recommend a supplier. Thanks for letting me know. Did you have a look at their website?

Miles,

Yes. It’s a very well designed and informative website.
In order to maintain our own website and to offer visitors more of an education before buying a kitchen, we have included a Recommended Associates link page to the website.
The company are most welcome to contact me with a view to appearing on the links page.

In your own experience Miles, how good are they in terms of customer service, cost and quality?
