this must have been asked before
but i have only just found/joined this site
is there a set distance that the top cupboards should
be from the worktop?

Davemate,

Generally around 500mm from top of countertop to the underside of the wall cabinet although the height of an adjoining larder/tall housing ultimately determines the height if wall units are connected to this and it may then be slighly less or more dependent on the manufacturer.
