Hi All Bit of advice needed as I’m new to all this kitchen buying business and don’t really have anyone else i can ask! I recently bought a house – a small terrace. Needs a new kitchen, so i have finally gotten around to starting to get some quotes. I haven’t got much cash to spend, so can only look at budget options. My initial thought was to get something flat packed and pay someone to fit it. An Ikea flat packed kitchen (with integrated oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher and fridge) came to approx £3000. My father in law would fit it for me – he wanted approx £500 to do this. Then i started thinking about the electric work, plumbing work etc etc and then the father in law moved to France, so fitting became a problem. Stumped as to where to turn next I approached B&Q to give me a quote [i know these are not "top notch" kitchens, but i really can't afford to go to an independant designer]. The B&Q man designed a kitchen and quoted me £5397 to supply and fully install everything. This includes quite a lot of electrical work because apparently i haven’t got the correct cooker socket and RCB work or something! I have a medium sized kitchen and the £5397 includes fridge, freezer, oven, hob, dishwasher and extractor fan, 5 wall units (varying sizes) and 5 ground units. Does this sound like a decent-ish price? £2300 is for parts and material, £3100 is for installation, plumbing, electrics etc etc. I was hoping to not have to spend that much, but if this is a realistic price then i guess i have no choice Thanks for any comments / assistance. Hi Sarah, You asked for comments/assistance: Comments: Is there much in the way of plumbing electrics etc then? as this does sound a lot for that amount of units.
Assistance: That depends on the area you are in? |

Hi Steven Thanks for replying… In total, there are 9 big ground units and 6 wall units – in my original post i didn’t count the units containing an appliance. It’s an L shaped kitchen with corner unit, dishwasher, sink cabinet, under counter fridge, under counter freezer and then pull out larder along one wall. The other wall has a pull out pan drawer, oven unit and drawer unit. The wall units include an extractor fan. Plumbing wise, i don’t think there is any major work. The dishwasher is being moved to the opposite side of the sink and the plumbing work is being tidied up (i did some of it myself!). Electrical wise, i need quite a few extra plug sockets for the built under appliances. I also need some of the worktop plug sockets moving and an old central heating control taking out. The man also said I need RCB work (don’t know what that is), bonding (don’t know what that is either) and a proper cooker socket installing (my electric cooker currently plugs into the mains through a standard plug socket). I am based near Ashton-Under-Lyne outside of Manchester, although by “assistance” i only really meant helpful advice! |

Hi Magic Hat, I too spent ages going around and couldn’t decide what was the best for my money. Had this site recommended to me by a friend. It’s a relatively new thing but well worth it in my view. They did my kitchen, my kitchen is a bit bigger than yours and quotes for mine were ranging from £8000 up to £17,000! The kitchen I wanted was from the biggest retailer (Acronym of Made For Idiots) I had a design done there and they quoted me £9,500. These guys did a better design and when they worked out the price at MFI it was only £7,600! It’s still on trial and they will do stuff for free to get the word about. Just tell them I sent you. The fitting on you quote does seem a bit expensive, i paid a local joiner £1200 to do mine, went on local people’s recommendations. |

thanks very much for your reply – much appreciated. try tomorrow. the only thing that worries me about buying the kitchen and arranging the tradesmen myself is the hassle of organising 3 seperate people to work together (plumber, electrician, joiner). I’m having enough trouble trying to get a plasterer to turn up to plaster my bedroom – the thought of trying to organise 3 tradesmen to turn up at the same time fills me with terror! Thanks for the price comments though. It seems you do save a lot by arranging installation your self. |

I was a bit sneaky in aranging my fitter. the place where I bought my kitchen from offer a fitting service, they quoted me £1470. they then told me they would have to send someone round to do what they call a pre-fit. I wasn’t too happy with this as the salesman wouldn’t tell me how much the total fit would be. After sitting there for two hours while this salesmen tried to tell me what was best for my room, i wasn’t in a great mood! The salesman then, to get a sale, said that if the guys comes around, does the prefit and it works out to be too much I can cancel the fit and get my own fitter. I suddenly got a bit excited at this as I could use their expertise to my own benefit. I put down my 10% fully refundable deposit and left with a smile on my face. The fitter guy then came round and did a great job, told me everything I needed to do extra, left me a list and a quote……….of an extra £800! He was a really nice guy so I was honest with him and said I probably wouldn’t go for the fit because it was a bit pricey. He then said its ok he gets £50 anyway for coming out and most people dont go ahead anyway!!!! I thenwent through the free paper ringing around and got a few to come and give me quotes. Using the MFI fitters notes I judged each fitter’s knowledge and skills accordinglyand chose two. One of them agreed to let me see his last work which was luckily a kitchen, the owners of the kitchen were happy to tell me he was great and when I saw their kitchen I was convinced. I was going to go back and just cancel the fit and just have the kitchen until a friend mentioned quiet. They did a better design, i did get it done for free but it would of been the best £150 i’ve ever spent. I then took the quote they’d done for me back to the salesman, he cancelled my original order and put through my new one and now I have a stunning kitchen. And money left for my next project. A little dishonest of me with MFI but looking at it, they we going to charge me a total of £10,300! For the same kitchen, even ordered from the same annoying salesman, through quiet and fitted by a local excellent tradesman set me back only £8,800! A massive saving. |

digijon, so how much did you end up paying for installation? electrics, plumbing, flooring any structural work cost extra? And if so, how much extra?Could you break it down? |

Hi lkj, I paid £1200 for the fitting, roughly broken down it was 19 units, the were ready built up so he charged me £40 per unit to fit them. He charged me £75 to fit my gas hob he charged me £150 for plumbing in my dishwasher and also moving my sink pipes and about £200 for building a special wine rack come bookcase as part of my design. I got my bro in law to do my electrics as he is a qualified electrician, the fitter would have charged me about an extra £250 to do it but my sis’s hubby only cost me a crate of fosters! He put in some extra sockets plus fuse spurs for my appliances. Had no structural work to do, kitchen was quite straight forward rip out and replace. Haven’t done the floor yet, haven’t decided what to go for, Mrs Digijon is a fussy one Broken down it cost: Kitchen – £7,600 (I was lucky enough to get quiet to do the design for free, did give them £50 as they helped so much, and i also saved £250 on the electrics) The cost of doing it the normal way: Kitchen and fitting through mfi – £10,300 |

Hi Digijon848 I’m new to all of this so do bare with me! I was reading through the posts here yesterday evening, and as i am in the same sort of situation with wanting a new kitchen, i thought i’d join in!. I have been looking for alternative ways to do my kitchen, rather than be taken for a ride with the large outlets and stuff. When i was reading through one of your posts i clicked on the link to the Quiet website, and was pleasantly surprised to find such an innovative idea. It certainly appeals to me and the thought of not crossing a salesman is really good!! Would you know what areas of the UK this company would cover? The only thing that concerned me was only being able to contact them via email – but as it says it is under construction so that may solve that in good time. Do you know where they are based? I guess i’m extra cautious! How did you find their service? Cheers, T |

Hi T, The company is based in the midlands but it does do work all over the country. The company itself is run by a guy that used to work for a large kitchen company but got fed up with being dishonest to customers and not giving them the best service. He left and set up on his own. The Quiet idea is a great one, i must have told about 50 people about it in only a fortnight because i’m ever so greatful! I really hope it goes along way because thinking about it people do get a bit of a rough deal when it comes to buying a kitchen. It’s the norm to go out and sit with a salesguy for hours for him to tell you whats best then you believe him and part with your cash. It does throw up a couple of questions……how can a comission based salesguy have your best intrests in hand when he’s working for a company that has to make a profit? Obvious if you think about it. I do accept that smaller outlets do give you a good service but you do pay a premium for that service, one such outlet in Solihull wanted to charge me £16,000 and Quiet’s design was still better. The not crossing a salesman thing is great because you get none of that sales talk rubbish. What i did was went to see the guy at mfi then found out about quiet from a guy who they’d helped, who also been harping on about them constantly! I sent my plans to them, they came up with a design after they asked me some questions, some strange ones but it got the job done. Then a day later i got an e-mail through with a picture and I was amazed. Once i’d approved the picture with mrs digi (who loved it straight away Digijon |

Hi digijon848, Thanks for that info. It does seem like they want to do a good job. Do you know if they offer a service where they will come out and visit you to take measurement etc etc, or is it solely web based? I’m not too bad with a pencil & ruler if not! When do they plan on making this service more widely known? – just so i know when the prices might climb!! It sounds as if my next best step is to contact them. Do you have any phone number for their offices? i have loads of ideas in my head and things ive seen in magazines etc and i’m not that briliant with expressing myself through an email!! Thanks for you help so far, glad i started reading this forum now! T |

Hi tkd, I did ask them about the home measure thing and I think there looking into it. At the moment though it is just web based. I have phoned Kevin (the owner) this afternoon and he seemed pleased that i’ve been making recommendations. He said he’d wondered why he’d had 16 e-mails already and he hasn’t told anyone! The culprit has been found! He’s just passing the stuff onto his new design graduates, but he is like the Gordon Ramsey of the kitchen world, everything goes through him before it goes out! They’ve got a next-day turnaround at the moment to test out there capacities and work the staff in preperation. It’s my exageration with the prices I think! They’ve stop the free thing though now but are doing it half price at the moment so get in there! Regarding the price, they are trying to appeal to all markets and dont want to make the service only available to people spending big bucks. For example you don’t mind spending out £100 if you budget is three grand but if they offered normal prices of say £3-400 which is what most companies, i’m told, would charge then everyone would not be able to benefit. He did say the service will probably be released towards the end of April as there waiting for some name problems with Quiet or something, plus there having all the major kitchen companies sponsor them on the site, one such company has already offered a substanstial sum he said to buy them! I’ve been told not to give the number out on the forum for obvious reasons, just send an e-mail with your name and number and someone will get back to you. He said the contact form will be running on the website soon, and he’s also now got a form they’ll send out with a guide as soon as you send an e-mail. I haven’t told him what i’ve said on this site and havent told him the name as i’m sure he’s telling me stuff in confidence but he’ll thank me in the long-run! I feel proud that i’m one of the first ever to experience this! |

Hi digijon 848, At least the owner is grateful for your recommendations! I am assuming that quiet are a relatively new company, as well as the website?? I agree when you say that on a grand scale, £100 spent on good design when you’re spending £3k is nothing really. Regards T |

He’s a pretty young guy but he’s really got his head screwed on and he’s on to a big winner with this. What he can do with a room is quite amazing. The company themselves are fairly new, i know he’s been setting it up since Christmas, but he’s had to get the training right. He does own their parent company, but they deal with big projects like massive apartment blocks, they design the interiors for those and provide the drawings when the building people try to sell the flats before they are built, another great idea……..Richard Branson watch out! In perspective £100 is nothing when you think about how painful it is having to sit through listening to pushy salesmen who don’t have a clue! You should see the movie style extension stuff they do. They can take a picture of your house then show you what it would look like after the extension, they even give you a dvd so you can walk around the inside rooms…….I thought i was up with technology but that blew my brain! |

Sounds like he’s doing well! Interesting to hear there is a parent company doing the big time stuff! Any idea what thats called?? – it would be great to have a look at their website if they have one. I’m really into all this modern apartment style stuff. I used to live & work in London and there just seemed to be loads of new apartment blocks popping up everywhere. I was never well off enough to buy one though! Technology amazes me too. Its a shame there are some companies out there that will literally sit in your house until you place an order. I had a friend who made the mistake of asking a large well known company to do their designs and had just that happen, they kept dropping the price too – crazy! None of that with quiet it seems!! T |
