I’ve got two round bowl sinks with

very little in the way of installation instructions.
Basically they leak when full of water. I tried tightening up the bolt in the centre of the plug hole to compress the rubber seal more and it improved but is still leaking.
The seal is a rubber kind of gasket that sits between the plastic drainage piece and the bowl itself. When the slotted bolt in the centre of the plug hole is tightened it squeezes

the drainage piece towards the bowl, thus squashing the gasket.

A friend at work suggested filling the bowl with water and then seeing if I could tighten the bolt a little more.

Another friend suggested using silicone sealant between the gasket and bowl – is this advisable or should I try the other option first?

Thanks!

I’ve never had any problem with a leak on the bowl to waste,

but having said that I’ll probably have one shortly.
I would use silicone sealant to stop the leak, if you decide to use silicone sealant use anti fungal and leave it to set for 24 hours.

It appears that the leak is coming

from the trap’s flange where it meets the sink waste.
This normally comes with a rubber seal that seals on tightening the trap’s plastic nut to the sink waste.
Applying PTFE tape around this lip (About 10 revolutions) will similarly prevent a leak when securing trap to the waste.

Thanks Tim :)

I only wrapped it round a couple of times (as I did it before I read your reply) and it seems to be fine. I’ll put some more on if it leaks again.

Is 10 wraps the recommended amount to use? I’ve never used PTFE tape before.

Forgive me if you have

already done this but when fitting the waste kit to the sink it must be sealed using plumbers mait. this will prevent any leaks that you describe

hope this helps

No I didn’t do that. As I say it seems to be okay now

I’ve got the PTFE tape on the thread, but thanks anyway.

Scos,

10 revolutions isn’t set in stone but enough to ensure the trap will not develop a leak.
Applying ptfe to the waste thread will not cure the leak and it should be applied directly to the trap if the rubber washer is missing.
With regard to Plumbers mate Chris, I believe that silicone provides a longer lastiung and more effective seal.
