I’ve just bought a house with a very small kitchen (3m x 1.68m) but would like to squeeze in a

slimline dishwasher.

Bearing in mind the advice offered on this site about siting a dishwasher close to the sink and on

an outside wall, I will need to remove an existing drawer unit from under the worktop to achieve this. Can this be done

without removing the worktop? Also, would I be able to reuse the drawers and fittings elsewhere, by converting an exisiting

(narrower) cupboard into a drawer unit? Is it possible to cut down drawer fronts?

An alternative to this would be to

install internal drawers within an existing cupboard. Do such things exist?

Do you have any suggesting for storing

cutlery and utensils if I have to loose the drawer unit completely?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Ridge,
Welcome to the forum.
Removal of a base unit is possible and fixings to the worksurfaces should be visible and

accessible, however there is a strong posssiblity that the unit is also fixed to the wall and that access is difficult due to

the backboard. Ths will become apparent after removing adjacent unit fixings, these may be located behind hinge plates, and

if, after removing these and the worktop fixings the unit will not budge, then you will have to remove the backboard or use a

holesaw in it to gain access to the wall fixings.
The only other item you will have to take out in order to remove the base

unit is the plinth.
Cutting down drawers is possible depending on the configuration and a premoulded drawer is an obvious

exception here. There are a number of slide out trays suitable for fitting behind doors and I’m sure that, like bedrooms,

hidden drawers are also suitable for use in the kitchen.
There are a number of kitchen component distributors across the UK

and who offer various slide out accessories for storage from wicker baskets to wirework drawers designed for use behind a

door.

Good luck,
Tim.
