I just fited a ceramic hob into my worktop, but the sealing strip provided was a narrow self-adhesive strip of foam, far smaller than

the recess beneath the edge of the hob.
The instructions warned against using silicone sealant (heat-resistance not good enough?).
I don’t want leaks through the join, so should I ignore the warning and use silicone, or is there a better material out there?

Sean,

The seal you describe is popular with manufacturers of hobs but a number of manufacturers provide an alternative material similar to BLU TAC in its consistency. I will post details

when I have further information on the product and it’s availability.
Meantime it is always best to follow the advice of a manufacturer as any problems that may arise from dismissing them may invalidate your guarantee.

Hi Sean
when i fit a hob i always give the cut out a good coating of p.v.a glue, this will give the exposed chipboard some protection if water was to seep under the hob .

Thanks for the responses.
Funnily enough I just fitted the sink, and I noticed that the sealing material was identical to Blu-tack. Seems to do the job, but I remember from my student days that it goes hard

after a year or so – I wonder what happens to its sealing properties then?

I had already followed the advice to seal all exposed edges of chipboard – I used varnish.

I’m still considering what is the best stuff for the hob. I have found some thermal-resistant silicone sealant, but now I’m inclined to buy some blu-tack – at least you can get the

hob off again!
