My ceramic hob came with a kind of foam seal which I stuck on and then put it in but I’m a bit concerned that it won’t prevent larger quantities of

water from penetrating. It doesn’t tell me to use any kind of sealant in the fitting instructions but I was thinking of using some silicone sealant to make it 100% water-tight.

Obviously this will make it a pain to remove but is that the only reason it doesn’t say to do it?

The reason for the foam seal is, as you state, for easier removal of the hob for servicing etc.

If the danger is that large quantities of water may penetrate the underside then I see no reason not to use silicone to seal the hob.
