Hi, I am helping my sister in law design her new kitchen. The existing gas central heating boiler is on its last legs and needs replacing. However new legislation requires that we fit a condensing boiler. These new boilers are massive compared to older designs. The boiler must fit in a 600w x 900h x 300d wall unit, and occupy as little space as possible within the unit (whilst respecting clearances naturally). The central heating system is open vent, though we could change to system (not combi). The only candidate I have found is the Ideal ICOS System HE. This needs a cabinet with minimum internal dimensions 400w x 857h x 278d for operation. However, this boiler needs an additional 95mm clearance under the boiler for maintenance, so I am thinking I’ll have to provide a removable cut-out in the base of the cabinet to accomodate this maintenance requirement. I can’t help feeling this is mad. Do most kitchen customers not want their boiler hidden away in a wall unit. I’m sure most people update their boiler with their kitchen (they have similar lifespans!). Have any of you come across some neat compact GCH boilers? Many thanks, Jim. |

Jim, Welcome to the forum. Although this is primarily a kitchen forum it does have a cross over value when discussing integration of boilers and my thoughts are that to limit yourself to a particular size of boiler you are, in turn, limiting yourself on the quality on offer. Far better in my opinion, to purchase a high quality boiler and to integrate it in a cabinet of sufficient depth. This can be achieved without detriment to the design and, it is possible if you wish, to have all cabinets made to a similar depth although I wouldn’t personally do this. Having done a little research on this, I have read good reviews on the following models, Viessmann Vitodens range of boilers, which are available in the UK, but will of course bow to a better judgement. |
