Dear Tim and

forum
We bought some solid walnut worktops from ikea, and bought some of their oil to put on it, three coats,
ist coat

put on, wait 15 mins then wipe off excess and then leave four hours, then repeat twice and then leave 24 hrs
we did all

that, but have noticed since that if water splashes on it, or a wet cloth is placed on it, and even today the kettle boiled

and overflowed, last night and when i saw it today it has left a mark from the bottom of the kettle. i have tried to rub it

off and i think some of the oil has come off, what do you suggest we do, we think we might have to oil it again and then

varnish it,
what is the recommmended thing to do with solid wood worktops, we have never had one before, and im worried

we`ve made a four hundred pound mistake.
also do you know where i can obtain a solid walnut upstand for our worktop, weve

a gap of about 2 inches to fill,
hope to hear from you soon
kind regards
ness and keef graham

Ness and Keef,

As you may know through reading the forum, I am not a fan of solid wood worktops but I respect the difference and that it is the preferred choice of many consuners.
As such I do not carry out much research on them but am aware of certain sites that sell them and will e-mail you details of one such website,

Tim

Water and wood generally can cause issues. I am not sure what oil Ikea sell, but I would always recommend that you light sand and reoil from time to time. We recommend Danish oil or Osmo Polyx Hardwax Oil. The latter is often used for flooring, but produces a hardwearing waterproof seal in the worktop.

Even with waterproofing I would always try to mop up excess water. If you treat it well and look after it then it should last.

The site owner does not like direct marketing of companies on his website, especially those that compete with his interests.

Which is why I’ve removed the link to your e-mail and website Tim.
Let me explain: I am not a fan of solid wood worktops – in my opinion (which Ness asked for), they are too high maintenance and do not work well if they require jointing in an L or U shaped configuration because of the natural movement due to the humidity factor and temperature changes.
Regarding your comment "the site owner does not allow direct marketing of companies especially those which compete with his interests" – you are absolutely right, however I have no problem with opinions which compete with my own.
If you look at our links page, you will see that the majority of links are to advice forums such as this where the consumer receives free advice, and a valuable insight and education about products in order to make a more informed decision before they purchase.

Tim,

Thank you for contacting me privately on this and perhaps the way you put it in the forum was somewhat lost in translation.
You may notice that regular contributors to the forum do not have their site links removed and this would be the case with you had this been your 10th or 20th contribution to the forum.
You may also have noticed on similar forums, an explicit flouting of the whole ethos of an advice forum by means of continuous promotion of a company in certain posted contributions.
I have no problem allowing links to those who offer valuable advice to consumers and offer up some of their time to educate and assist visitors who may otherwise be ripped off by the more unscrupulous elements within our industry.
It is particularly heartening to me when someone with your experience and knowledge decides to contribute on an impartial basis for the better good of the consumer and I do realise that at certain times the solution lies within your own services.
I have re-instated your website link and apologise for misinterpreting your post.
As a footnote to this post, I have responded to your e-mail Tim but it appears your Spamcop programme has me on its Blacklist and the message was returned. I can just see it now after reading my post "Ill show that b******d removing my link. I’ll blacklist ‘im"

The spam thing is out of my control! All part of my hosting company’s service. A couple of weeks ago it black listed my Father too! :?
