What is the general feeling about islands with a hob/hood in the centre of a kitchen?

My mum is in the

process of planning her new kitchen and she has a dilemma. A few questions have arisen..

Are central hoods efficient in

removing cooking smells? (as opposed to ones on walls) Are they always noisy?

Are central hoods ONLY for ultra modern

kitchens? i.e would central hood clash with more traditional cabinets?

How have people found using kitchens with

islands/hoods?

Cheers

Lisbet,

I don’t know if there is any real dilemna here and many

people choose this option ahead of the more conventional location against a wall.
As for efficiency, providing the

extractor is ducted to an outside wall, (Sometimes difficult to achieve with an island extractor unless the joists above run

parallel to the duct), they should be just as effective as a conventional extractor.
Noise – checking the decibel levels of

your proposed manufacturer will offer you a comparison to help you make the right choice.

Island hoods are at home not

only in the ultra modern kitchen but I suppose the real question you must ask yourself is, is stainless steel considered too

contemporary for a traditional kitchen?
Well for me, perhaps so, and of course it’s important that your other appliances

are matching in colour. I say this because I believe you may have difficulty sourcing an island extractor that isn’t

stainless steel or aluminium finish.
The irony here is that stainless steel has been around a lot longer than traditional

style kitchens yet is considered a contemporary material.

In the end it is your own choice that counts and it may be

worth researching bespoke manufacturers of extractors to try and discover whether they would make a traditional style

extractor that suits the style of your mum’s kitchen.

Failing that there are a good choice in traditional wall mounted

extractors.

Good luck,

Tim
