Before finding this site, I foolish bought an IKEA kitchen…well I’ve used 40mm battens to get the thing square and for plumbing, etc. Now it comes to the worktop. Would it be a good idea to buy a pre-cut laminate worktop to my measurements (taking into consideration the walls not being straight) or buy some 700mm width worktop and cut it myself (considering I’ve never made a mitre joint before and would need to hire equipment, etc). Or do I just get someone in to do it? DIY level is not bad… It’s causing me sleepless nights, especially after the calamity of putting those damn base units in. Advice much appreciated. |

Didsy, Welcome to the forum. Just to clarify one point raised by your e-mail, I do not critisise the quality of Ikea and for the cost they do offer good value to the consumer, I merely state that the cabinetry is not fitter friendly and with a little more thought for the accommodation of services, they would perhaps increase their popularity with those who fit them. Laminate worksurfaces are generally available in three widths, 600mm single edged, 640 double edged and 900mm double edged. If you require a greater depth because walls are out of sqaure or recesses are present or appliances require door integration, then you should choose to reduce the depth of a 900mm top to achieve the depth you require. does offer a solution to your problem. Tim. |

Thanks Tim. The actual quality of the ikea units is very good considering their price but, as you rightly say, they are definitely not fitter friendly unless you are putting them up on a perfectly square wall. I have purchased some 900m deep worktops and will take the plunge tomorrow and try to fit them (following your guide). If it all goes pear shaped I may well be posting another “help”. Thanks |
