How to create space for end panels

Postby Gylonso on Wed Sep 30, 2009 2:41 pm

Afternoon,

We are currently fitting a new kitchen into a new area created from knocking through into the old utility area and cloakroom. Due to this area originally being single skinned walls, which have now been insulated and built out to the same point as the cavity walls of the rest of the room, it wasn't possible to get accurate measurements when ordering the kitchen. As it is at the moment there is room for the two 900mm corner cupboards either side of the 900mm range cooker (which is the bottom of a U shaped kitchen design). The original idea was to get a nice finish by including end panels between the corner cupboards and the range cooker, but we are about 15 - 20mm short on the space for this.

As the cupboards have 50mm service void at the back, is it okay to reduce this to make room to include the end panels? If so would I remove the same amount from all the cupboards on the two sides of the U-shaped kitchen? Or progressively less as I go from one cupboard to the next (keeping the fronts level of course), or would that make fitting the worktop more tricky as it would mean the turn wouldn't be quite 90 degrees)?

Hope I have explained the problem okay.

Thankyou for any help

Gyles.

Welcome to the forum.,
I'm assuming that you really mean "pilasters" to act as decorative divisions between the range and the adjacent cupboards.
It's ok to remove the necessary amount required from the rear void of each return cupboard in order to accommodate the pilasters but in assuming you also have a sink fitted to one section of your U-Shaped design, I would remove the necessary amount from one side only so as to leave a sufficient worktop space behind your sink. Remember that you are looking to achieve uniformity for the worktop overhang and this renders that what ever you reduce the cabinetry by, the same applies to the worktop overhang, otherwise a greater overhang will be easily evident.

Thankyou for the reply.

I did mean end panels, not pilisters, as in the kitchen we have chosen that was the option (the end panels have a decorative edge which is mainly what will be seen when they are fitted between the cupboard and the range cooker, and also will be what the plinth will butt up against to seperate it from the cooker).

I can see what you mean about only taking the amount needed from one side to leave maximum amount of worktop for the sink insert (an added bonus of less cupboards to make adjustments to as well then).

Thanks again for your help
