new kitchen design

Hi, we are planning a new kitchen with an island unit (just units, no services to it). We are also replacing the floor in the whole of the kitchen. I would have thought the best thing would be to lay the flooring (laminate, suitable for kitchens) across the whole of the floor, i.e. under the perimeter base units. But should it go under the island unit as well?

You really only need to lay the flooring up to the unit legs Tony and this can be fitted after the cabinets have been installed and before fitting the plinth.
My criteria is - if it's a fixture, such as cabinets or integrated appliances, why waste your money on aesthetics when it will never be seen until next time you replace the kitchen and given the length of time you expect to refit, that would render that you also replace the flooring as no doubt new trends will have replaced laminate floors by that time.

If it isn't a fixture, such as a standalone dishwasher, fridge or cooker, then flooring should be fitted to the underside but don't forget to allow for this additional height of a built under appliance sat on the floor finish when fitting the cabinets,

Hope this helps,

Tim
