Not enough room for integrated D/W

Postby Caroline on Wed Sep 23, 2009 1:45 pm

Hello there, I'm really hoping someone can help. I had a lovely kitchen professionally fitted a few months ago with a 600mm gap left for the dishwasher. Due to illness I was unable to get D/W sorted at the time and now I've checked the space I find it's only 595mm wide and all the dishwashers I've been looking at are 598. The kitchen company has unfortunately gone bankrupt in the meantime so can't go back to them. All other dimensions are fine, plumbing is ready to go and the stone worktop is in place and firmly glued on. The gap has a cupboard on one side and the sink unit on the other. I need a full-size dishwasher not a slimline one so has anyone got any idea how I can squeeze it in?
This is a great forum by the way. Very useful for clueless people like me!
Cheerio

Caroline,
Thanks for the kind words about our forum and glad you find it useful. Sorry to hear you've not been so well and hope you're feeling much better now.
You do have a problem that isn't easily resolved without some adaptation of the adjacent units.
Given that the granite tops will, most likely, be adhered to the top of the cabinets this is made a little more difficult than it would be with a laminate or wooden top which can easily be removed.
With a little luck the cabinet adjacent the space can be freed up from the top above and slid out to shave the relevant amount from it in order to accommodate the dishwasher.
Given that a cabinet is generally 3-5mm bigger than the door that fronts it then an installer can take off this amount to bring about a solution.
Removing a further cabinet, ( Avoid trying to remove the sink cabiet as this involves disconnecting the plumbing), would also allow you to halve the amount taken from each but the biggest obstacle as I see it will be how well adhered the granite tops are to the cabinets.
Hope this assists you in reaching a solution but it's not an easy fix I'm afraid.

Hi Tim, thanks for the prompt reply.
Yep, we were afraid that it wouldn't be an easy fix. The carcass adjacent to the gap is not solid wood, just the standard MDF stuff with a veneer on top so is it ok to shave off that? It will never be seen once d/w fitted. We have a very useful brother who has some sort of cutting tool that he says could take it off. Also, if the d/w is 598mm is that the space needed or 600mm? I just remember you said on another post to leave exactly the amount of the d/w but don't we need a few mm more for room to slide in the d/w?
Thanks again from, a slightly less worried, Caroline

Caroline,
Firstly an integrated dishwasher the size of which you detail, is meant to fit into a space of 600mm, any wider and the point of having an integrated appliance would be lost.
You could get away with 598mm yet 600mm will give greater assurance that the doors would align correctly and there will be no issues with your dishwasher door snagging against adjacent doors so this should be the aim.
Good luck to your brother and let us knoiw the results.
