Worktop Query

Postby Gylonso on Sun Oct 11, 2009 4:08 pm

Afternoon,

I have a question relating to fitting of our laminate worktops. (I tried to log on to the worktop forum, but didn't seem to be registered for that so came back to here).

I have cut all the pieces and cut all the mitre joints and all fit together well, not bad for a first try at doing the mitre joints (the only problem I had was the last cut for the last mitre joint where one clamp slipped during cutting!! Managed to correct the problem though so all okay in the end).

Anyway the question is to do with the worktop bolts. All the mitre joints are over 900mm corner cupboards from Homebase. These cupboards have solid tops on one side of the corner, and only thin gaps in the top (200mm) on the other side. As 2 of my 3 mitre joints are over the solid tops I won't be able to see them to tighten up when the worktop is in place. So what do I do? Cut holes in the solid tops matching where the bolts go?

I was supplied with 3 bolts for each joint. Is it best to use all 3, or is 2 okay? I ask because the gap between the fixings that hold the cupboard together is 300mm, so fitting 3 in that space would mean them being close together (although there is 60mm space at the front of the cabinet, should I use that for 1 of the bolts; this again would mean cutting some of the top of the cabinet out to allow space to tighten the bolt).

Thankyou for any help

Gyles.

Gyles,

Personally, I only ever used two bolts to form a joint and this should be sufficient but if you are happier using three then that's fine.
You will have to cut holes in the top of the cabinet to accommodate you obtaining access to tighten the bolts after applying your silicon and marrying up the worktops.
As for distances then I would suggest about 130mm from the front edge to centre and around 450mm from front for second bolt - if using standard depth worktops wshich I assume you are.
Of course this will change if using three bolts so you would end up with one as close to the rear back panel as possible so you can access it and another in a central position.
