Up until recently there has been no regulation nor was there any governing body looking after the interests of kitchen fitters. This pretty much changed, in my opinion for the better, when last year saw the launch of the iKBBI, the Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Installers whose mission was to encourage membership of those fitters whose skills could be distiguished alongside others of similar skills. In addition to this they also allow retailer membership of those companies wishing to enhance their service offerings whilst employing iKBBI members.
As with any new organisation, there were and still are those who resist change but change was necessary in an industry that allowed anyone without skills to set up as an installer.
More recently still we have seen the launch of the KBBISR, (Kitchen Bedroom and Bathroom Industry Standards Register) run by Napit, (National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers).
The registration scheme gives an individual installer an opportunity to match their skills against the National Occupational Standards for Kitchen Installation giving the consumer the confidence to know that their installer is qualified to do the job.
Both schemes appear to be good news for consumers given that they give you greater assurance that the person you employ to undertake an interiors project is more than up to the job.
See the following links for more information and it would be good to hear your feedback should you decide to employ a member to undertake the work
