Microwave and hood in wall unit????

Postby splodge2001 on Tue Dec 29, 2009 5:24 pm

I have small kitchen and was going to go with a chimney hood above a gas hob, however I'm a little concerned about giving all that space to the hood. Was wondering if it would be possible to house a built in microwave + telescopic hood above the hob. If so what kind of unit would I need to house it? I'm getting a Wickes kitchen and they only do 720mm wall units or bridging units which are either 294 or 441 tall, although the 441 unit says 'not to be used above hob units :?

Personally, I think siting the microwave above the cooker hood makes it too high to use comfortably ... unless you're very tall. You'd have to choose your cooker hood very carefully, too - many have the motor in the wall unit above them - so no room for the microwave.

Whirlpool usefully make one that's all one unit:
http://www.whirlpool.eu/app.cnt/whr/en_GB/pageid/pgwpproddtl001/catid/1/subcatid/5/prodid/27897
but it hasn't been so popular that all the other manufacturers have copied it ... it's still the only one on the market. The specification says that it must be fitted 650mm above a gas hob ... more if any one ring is more than 3.2kW or the total hob power is above 10kW (you have to ask the manufacturers for the new height).

It would make more sense if you were having an electric hob, because the hood could be positioned lower.

You may also have problems with the gas regulations ... which appear to say that wall units at the side of a gas hob musn't be positioned within 50mm of the side of the hob. Some gas engineers are taking this to mean that an integrated cooker hood must be 700mm wide for a 600mm hob ... and that there must be a 50mm gap either side of a 600mm telescopic hood (when fitted over a 600mm gas hob). Others will fit wall units up to the side of a gas hob ... if that's the arrangement you currently have. It's all a bit of a minefield!

This is an interesting post.

If you take a look at a lot of American kitchens they seem to like this set up, but I have always found it a bit odd.

To allow for the majority of extractor fan motors and associated pipe work the microwave would have to be positioned fairly high within the cabinet, and considering the vast majority of extractor fan cabinets need to already be positioned higher than the usual cabinet line, the microwave is surely too high for your average height person - unless you are my farther in law who is 6.8  !!

I think its a noval idea and on paper could work, but I think that in reality its a bit tricky and as Mijjre says you will end up with a fairly un-ergonomical microwave.
