kitchen units and sinks

Postby linda84 on Thu Jan 14, 2010 10:04 pm

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help.
I am looking to change my sink base unit from a 1000mm to a single 600mm unit to create space for a dishwasher.
I currently have a gas meter underneath which is attached to the unit by a metal plate, and the pipes are currently on the right hand side of unit.

Is this possible to change to a single unit? I'm assuming I would just need to get a plumber in to move pipes for the sink :D

Two questions though: Anyone any idea how to install unit around gas pipes and meter?
What size of sink do I need for 600cm unit, I have seen some that measure 1000mm x 500mm and say suitable for 600mm unit??

thanks

Linda,
The overall sink size may be larger but the bowl or bowls can be accommodated in a 600mm cabinet and most manufacturers detail suitable cabinet size in the sink specifications. So the answer is - yes it will fit.
As for your Gas Meter, then it's a costly undertaking to change it's location to suit your design but this is an option.
Alternatively the 600mm sink cabinet will have to be adapted in order to house the metre. To do this in the neatest way possible generally involves removing the meter, creating sufficiently sized holes for pipework, fitting the cabinet in position and reconnecting although this may not always be possible if the meter is at ground level and there is little possibility of it sitting comfortably in the cabinet without adaptation to the Gas service inlet pipe.
You'll find that the majority of kitchen installers have had to undertake alterations to cabinetry for the housing of Gas Meters at some stage or other so it's part and parcel of the work they do.
The important thing to stress here is that whoever undertakes Gas work alterations must be on the Gas Safe Register.
