Hi all
New here so here goes.
Now here is a can of worms .. There is no such trade as a kitchen fitter .. so who is qualified to train Kitchen fitters.. Some like Miles might say himself as a qualified carpenter. however as a business man running my own installation firm for over 26 years now found that many carpenters ( although excellent at carpentry ) do not make good kitchen installers due the inherant differences in working with MDF and Chipboard . A lot of the skills involved in installing a kitchen are common sense .
Just to point out that the local government traing scheme down here has now initiated a Kitchen installers NVQ level 3, of which my apprentice has passed with flying colours haveing been trained by me, a non carpenter.
I would welcome some recognition of a trade for fitters as this would give us a an identity like plumbers carpenters and so on .
Kitchen fitting is a multiskilled trade.
A person does not need to know how to plumb a boiler and central heating system to sucessfully plumb in a sink , nor does he need to be a time served tiler ( is there such a thing .. i am not sure ) to be able to fix tiles to a good standard.
However there are legal requirements that need to be followed when installing any kitchen .. such as venting where gas is involved .. part L of building regs regarding fixings to certain interior and exterior walls.. and not forgetting part P for electrical .. of which I have just completed my course and passed , awaiting assesment from NIC now .
Over the years I have constructed walls for chinmeys and breakfast bars.. had to do plastering to make good damaged walls .. even painting and decorating .
I have seen building sites where the local carpenters have fitted the kitchen and although they have done good joints and the such .. the kitchens have been installed incorrectly because of their lack of knowledge of the product, and not because of lack of skill .. I personnaly think that kitchen fitting is as specialized as any other trade but who is qualified to set the standards??
Just a thought.
Phill :?
Kitchens are only as good as the person who installs them
