Corian worktops - what's all the fuss about?
Corian worktops are perhaps one of the best known kitchen worktop materials in the acrylic range, the other popular names being Staron and HiMacs. But what is it that makes Corian so popular? Is it its versatility? Its durability? Its colour and style range? Perhaps all three, so let's examine these three aspects in turn, before considering the alternatives to Corian worktops, and what you need to be aware of if comparing them to other, cheaper, acrylic worktops.
Corian worktops - versatility
One of the most striking aspects of Corian is its astonishing versatility. Corian can be moulded, cut, glued and even vacuum moulded.
Essentially there's really very little that can't be achieved with Corian, which is why it has been the product of choice by many interior designers looking to create unique designs and individual kitchen solutions. With Corian it is possible to create a purely individual kitchen worktop, with sweeping curves or dramatic corners, and even have the sink or drainage grooves built right in to the material itself.
Many people have decided that the advantages of Corian in terms of its versatility allow it to be used elsewhere in the home - particularly bathrooms. From breakfast bars to wash basins, Corian opens up a whole range of possibilities. As a result of its versatile moulding and manufacture many people have created kitchen worktops with curved back splashes, providing a completely waterproof and easy to clean solution.
One point many people often notice with Corian worktops is the fact that there appear to be no joins or seams. Although Corian does appear almost magical in what it can be used to create, it does still need joins. However, the illusion is achieved because the bonding material used to glue the sections together is made of the same composite materials as the worktops themselves, meaning that they're virtually impossible to spot. This drastically improves the appearance of Corian worktops as well as improving the level of hygiene.
Corian worktops - durability
Certainly Corian worktops are known to be tough. At 13mm thick and with a 10 year warranty this is perhaps unsurprising. But although it's not easy to damage, chip, crack or dent, sometimes we can all become a little over enthusiastic in the kitchen, and if you're crashing pans about, chopping vegetables without a chopping board, and sawing your Sunday roast with a jigsaw then the chances are that eventually you'll mark the surface. No problem - unlike many materials Corian worktops can easily be repaired, and because the material is a gel-like composite, it can be filled in, smoothed over and left as good as new with absolutely no revealing edges. This, for many people, represents real peace of mind.
But although being aware of the ease with which Corian worktops can be repaired is all well and good, it's important to point out that a genuine Corian worktop is a tough surface, and the fact that they've been around since 1979, and come with a decade's worth of warranty demonstrates clearly that this is a surface that's going to be around a lot longer than the box of unmentionable leftovers at the back of the fridge that you pretend you don't know anything about.
Corian worktops - colour and style
This is often the first thing that draws people's attention to the Corian range. With over seventy different colours, patterns and styles, and more being added every year, if you can't find the perfect Corian worktop colour for your kitchen then it's unlikely you'll ever be satisfied! From translucent, frosted finishes to cobalt and coffee, from lime and mandarin to silt and silver birch, even the names conjure up whole possibilities where style is concerned.
Whether you're looking for traditional worktop colours and styles, or something that will make a bold statement about your style and attitude to 21st century living, the range of Corian worktop colours and styles is as good a place to gain inspiration for the remainder of the kitchen as anywhere else. Whether you start with the Corian range, or end with it, there is always going to be a match that's perfect for your vision of the kitchen you want to see.
Corian worktops - the alternatives
It has to be said that Corian worktops are not the cheapest on the market, and there are similar looking acrylic worktops available for far less. However- a word of warning. Often the reason why these comparatively similar, yet much cheaper alternatives are available at such a lower price is because they have a very much thinner inner core, rendering them much more prone to damage. By all means if you tend only to use your kitchen to arrange displays of feathers, cook a bowl of cereal of read a thinnish magazine, save your money and go with the cheaper alternatives. But if you need your kitchen to work as hard as you do, then Corian worktops are an ideal solution
